Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Fairfield pitching staff allowed three runs (two earned) and eight hits in a couple of 2-1 decisions against the Yale Bulldogs. The Stags were on the winning side in the first game but were the victims of an unearned run in the sixth inning of the finale to finish off the split.
The pitching of the Stags (9-16, 1-2 MAAC) was in control right from the first pitch. Three pitchers combined to surrender four hits and one earned run in the opener, giving Fairfield their fifth-straight win at Historic Yale Field, dating back to 2012.
Ryan O'Connor started the pitching gem as the lefty threw the first three innings, allowing the lone earned run and a pair of hits. Peter Horn earned his second career win (both coming in the last couple of weeks), as he surrendered just one hit in his two innings of work. Mike Bonaiuto finished the game for the staff, recording his second save of the season throwing the final two shutout innings giving up a lone hit.
The only offense for the Stags came in the very first inning when Kevin Radziewicz doubled in Tim Zeng and Drew Arciuolo to give Fairfield a 2-0 lead, as they led the entire game. The Yale (8-19-1, 2-2 IVY) pitching settled down and allowed just two hits for the final six innings.
The Bulldogs' staff (who entered the series with an ERA over 7.50), continued their excellence in the nightcap limiting the Stags to a single hit, which came in the fifth inning.
Despite not being able to figure out the Ivy League pitching staff, the Stags stayed in the game as one of their four senior captains led the way, and once again it was on the mound. Aaron Howell allowed two Yale hits in his four innings, keeping the game scoreless until the sixth.
In that frame, the Stags managed to score the game's first run without the benefit of a single hit. Tyler Gambardella walked to lead-off the inning and was immediately sacrificed to second. The freshman would later score on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Tracy with the bases loaded. Tracy was also the lone Stag to notch a hit in the finale.
Despite their best efforts, Fairfield lost the lead as Yale manufactured two runs in their half of the sixth. Harrison White drove in the tying run on a squeeze play to third and Fairfield Prep product Simon Whiteman would score the eventual game-winning run off an error.
The Stags had one final rally in them as Gambardella reached first after a dropped third strike, but the rally fell well short.
Fairfield will stay on the road when they travel to New Rochelle, N.Y., for a three-game MAAC series against Iona that starts Saturday at noon.
