FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team dropped the middle game of their three-game series against MAAC-leading Rider with a 6-3 decision to the Broncs. The two teams will now play the rubber game of their set with a 1pm first pitch at Don and Chris Cook Field on Sunday.
The Stags took the early lead as
Zach Stephenson launched his first Fairfield home run through the wind over the right field wall. The long ball was a two-run shot that put the Stags up 2-0.
After Rider cut the deficit in half, the Stags added an insurance run as
Connor Scanlan drove in a run with a double in the fourth.
The Broncs would score the next five runs in the game, scoring a run in six-straight innings. A bases loaded hit batter and a walk tied the game in the fifth and Rider gained the lead with an infield single in the sixth.
The Stags got base runners on in four-straight frames, getting the tying run to the plate in the sixth and eighth innings. Rider's Christian Aiello was able to keep Rider in front, striking out 10 batters in just four innings.
Stephenson and
TJ Schmalzle led the Stags with two hits apiece.
The two teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at Don and Chris Cook Field at 1pm.
