Stags Split Doubleheader with Manhattan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University baseball team scored seven runs in the first game but was silenced by Joey Rocchietti in the nightcap, as they split a doubleheader with Manhattan with a 7-4 victory and a 5-0 setback.

After going 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position in last night's loss, the Stags (22-20, 11-4 MAAC) bats came alive in the first game on Saturday, erupting for five runs in the second inning to take a 5-3 lead. Michael Conti continued his hot hitting with a two-run single in the frame, his fifth hit in the last two games. Troy Scocca, Jack Gethings, and Drew Arciuolo all tallied RBI singles in the deciding frame.

Fairfield recorded much needed insurance runs when Kevin Radziewicz extended his hitting streak to 11-straight games with a RBI single in the third and Arciuolo notched his second RBI of the game, with a bunt single with the bases loaded in the sixth.

Gavin Wallace wasn't as sharp as previous outings, but was still able to grind out a complete game win in the opener. In order to go the full seven innings, he had to get through big trouble in the sixth when Manhattan (15-26, 6-9 MAAC) loaded the bases with two outs. The next batter would hit a fly ball to left field, which ended the threat and eventually helped the Stags to a 7-4 win.

Pitching took over in the second game with both pitchers surrendering just one hit in their first five innings. Kyle Dube did not allow a hit until the third inning, retiring the first eight hitters he faced. His pitching foe Joey Rocchietti was equally as successful against the Fairfield batters, surrendering just one hit through the first six innings, with a Mac Crispino single the only blemish.

The Stags almost got on the scoreboard in the fifth, but Manhattan showed their fundamentals by throwing out the runner at home after an attempted steal of second caused a rundown. Fairfield would also get a runner thrown out at home in the seventh, the back-end of a 3-6-2 double play.

Manhattan was the first team to rally, recording five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Anthony Rocchietti led off the inning with a home run and Richie Barrella drove in two runs with a single.

Rocchietti finished his night with a complete game six hit shutout. One of those six hits came off the bat of Radziewicz, extending his hitting streak to 12-straight games.

Fairfield will return home for their lone weekday game in the upcoming week, hosting NJIT on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
