Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The sun could not set on the Stags tonight. Literally, as darkness started to pass over Alumni Diamond, the Fairfield University baseball team pulled out another memorable victory. Kevin Radziewicz was Tuesday's hero as he singled in the game-winning run in the 13th inning as the Stags won their 20th game of the season, a 5-4 walk-of victory against crosstown rivals Sacred Heart. Radziewicz's single came just in time, as the 13th frame would have been the final one of the game, due to darkness.
“We go into the mindset that every win is a team win,” Radziewicz said. “There's a new player every game who steps up. Today, Michael Conti had a big hit, and I came through in the 13th.”
After the Fairfield (20-18) bullpen kept the Pioneers (21-16) off the board for the final nine innings, the Stags had one final push to avoid the tie.
Conti lined a base hit into right field, and Drew Arciuolo reached base after an error on his sacrifice bunt allowed Conti to advance to third with nobody out. Facing an 0-2 pitch, the sophomore fisted the inside pitch over the drawn in third baseman to give the Stags the victory.
Although, Radziewicz will be the offensive player looked at with his game-high four hits, two runs scored, and the winning RBI, it was the Fairfield bullpen and a key defensive play is what kept the marathon going.
The five pitchers closed out the final nine innings for the Stags, not allowing a run and surrendering just three hits. Aaron Howell went the longest for the home side, throwing 4.1 innings and giving up just one hit in securing his fifth win of the season.
That key defensive play came in the 10th, with the Pioneers holding the go-ahead run at third with one out. Howell forced a line drive out to shallow center field, Arciuolo made the catch and gunned down the runner at the plate to end the threat.
The Stags led for the majority of the game after Victor Sorrento gave Sacred Heart the lead in the top half of the first. Jake Salpietro singled in the tying run in Fairfield's half of the opening inning, and Mac Crispino drove a RBI single up the middle to give the Stags a 2-1 lead.
Brendan Tracy's RBI single in the third gave the Stags an insurance run, but the Pioneers struck for three runs in the fourth, with a double from Jesus Medina being the biggest blow.
Trailing 4-3, the Stags rallied in the sixth, loading the bases for pinch hitter Tim Zeng. The freshman would not see a strike, as he walked on four-straight pitches, tying the game at 4-4.
The one-run victory was the eighth of it's kind for the Stags this season, who are 8-7 in games decided by a lone tally. Last season, Fairfield was 4-10 in those contests. And it seems like there is a different player each game who steps up in those contests.
"I know if I don't get the job done, I'm going to hand it to the next person in the lineup and he'll get the job done," Radziewicz said.
Fortunately for the Stags, he did get the job done.
Fairfield, who has now recorded 20 wins in five of their last six seasons, will look for win number 21 when they host Stony Brook on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
