Stags Make History in Blowing Past Saint Peter?s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Whatever the final month of the season holds, the 2016 Fairfield University baseball team will always be able to say they left their mark on the Stags record book. By sweeping their doubleheader today at Saint Peter's, the Stags have increased their conference winning streak to nine-straight games, something that no Fairfield team has ever done before.  The Stags accomplished this record by bringing out the offensive power by scoring 23 runs and clubbing 27 hits in taking the two contests 12-2 and 11-3.

“We're getting good pitching and giving our hitters some time to score runs,” Head Coach Bill Currier said. “I think this streak has been a combination of pitching and defense. Our the bats are also heating up as the weather gets warmer.”

And on the 64 degree day that was filled with sunshine, the offense was on fire.

The Stags (18-18, 9-2 MAAC) scored two runs in the first inning of the opener as a preview for the rest of the day that would feature 23 runs. Troy Scocca dribbled a RBI single and Mac Crispino brought a run home with a sacrifice fly to put the Stags on the scoreboard.

Fairfield scored two more runs in the third on a throwing error and a Brendan Tracy RBI single down the line to give the road team all the runs they would need.

However, the Stags would not stop scoring runs as they put across three in the sixth and five in the eighth. In the sixth, the Stags used some 'small ball' by getting runs off a throwing error, a fielder's choice, and a squeeze play, executed perfectly by Dan Hopkins.

The eighth inning had more action as the Stags scored five runs in an inning that started with two outs and a runner at second. With the bases loaded, Tracy drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch, but Crispino cleared the bases with a three-run triple to put the Stags in double figures. Drew Arciuolo capped off his three-hit opener with a single that found the hole on the right side, scoring Crispino.

The pitching cruised through their outings on the mound, with John Signore earning his first collegiate victory after allowing one run and six hits in seven innings. He also struck out six and walked one. Peter Horn and Bobby McNiff needed just 25 pitches to get through the final two innings without allowing a run.

It took the Stags four inning to get the bats going against Saint Peter's (6-28, 1-10 MAAC), but once they did, the bats were as hot as they were in the opener. The Stags scored 11 runs on 14 hits in the final four innings.

Tracy led off the fourth frame with a double and would later score on a Scocca fielder's choice. The junior would account for the tying run when he scored on a passed ball, tying the game at 2-2.

After both squad exchanged runs in the fifth, the Stags broke the game open with eight runs in the final two frames. Michael Conti gave Fairfield the lead with a RBI single and Kevin Radziewicz pulled the 3-2 pitch into left field to give the Stags two insurance runs.

It was all Fairfield from that point as Jack Gethings drove home two with a double and Arciuolo notched his sixth hit of the day with his first career RBI triple. For the first time in his career, the sophomore tallied back-to-back three hit games.

Gavin Wallace secured the complete game for his fifth win of the season.

Besides the team-high six hits from Arciuolo, Fairfield had many contributors to account for their 23 runs. Radziewicz and Crispino led the squad with five RBI apiece with Radziewicz also pacing the team by scoring four runs.

“We stayed after it and got a couple of key hits,” Coach Currier said. “We got some people on base and came through with a couple of clutch hits.”

Coming into the day, the Stags were tied for the sixth longest active streak for consecutive conference wins, with today's results still being stack against the rest of the competition. The nine-straight MAAC victories breaks the record that was at eight-straight set in 1997.

The Stags will look for their third-straight MAAC sweep as the two teams meet tomorrow at noon.
