Box Score STORRS, Conn. – Bobby Melley's solo homer and Alex LeFevre's sacrifice fly were the only runs that UConn was able to scratch across against the Stags, but the American Athletic Conference power was able to hold on and take a 2-1 decision at J.O. Christian Field. The Stags strung two hits together in the sixth inning, capped by Brendan Tracy's single to account for their lone run.
The Huskies (15-15) knocked home the first run of the game when the senior Melley connected on a two-out solo shot in the first inning to give UConn a 1-0 lead.
UConn added their second run in the fourth when LeFevre flied a long fly ball to right field with the bases loaded, scoring Joe DeRoche-Duffin who doubled to began the inning. The Stags (12-17) pulled off a textbook infield play to end the inning as Bryan Daniello was called out at the plate when Kevin Radziewicz threw to the middle of the diamond and Jack Gethings cut off the throw and nailed the runner at home for a 2-6-2 caught stealing.
That would be the last run the Huskies would sneak by as Fairfield pitching held UConn to three hits in the final four innings.
The first three hits for the Stags came off the bat of senior Jake Salpietro who singled in his first three at-bats, the final one coming in the sixth inning. Tracy was the next Stag to get in the hit column as he singled up the middle to drive in his classmate Salpietro.
The Stags threatened several times in the pitcher's dual but the Huskies were able to get the big pitch when they needed to, turning three double plays. The biggest instance came in the second inning when Fairfield loaded the bases with nobody out. After Ronnie Rossomando got a strikeout for the first out of the inning, he forced a groundball to second base for the inning ending double play.
The Fairfield bullpen consisting of Jake Binder, Peter Horn, and Aaron Howell allowed three hits and one walk in their four innings pitched.
Fairfield will return home to host another MAAC series when they take on Niagara for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
