STORRS, Conn. – Fresh off their first MAAC series victory of the season, the Fairfield University baseball team will look to keep their momentum going as they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on the UCONN Huskies on Wednesday at 3pm. Fairfield will look to snap a 10-game losing streak in the series and pick up their first win over UCONN since 2006.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Behind two stellar pitching performances from Gavin Wallace and Kyle Dube, the Stags completed their first MAAC sweep of the season, taking all three games from the Iona Gaels. Wallace (complete game seven innings) and Dube (eight innings) each allowed just one earned run while pitching deep into their start. After Friday night's marathon, the Stags did not allow for much drama as they did not trail for any part of the doubleheader, and was only tied for less than a half an inning. Mac Crispino's three hits and three runs were a big part of the reason why Fairfield was able to maintain their leads and Drew Arciuolo's two RBI in the finale kept the game out of reach.
FAIRFIELD VS UCONN: It's been nine years since the Stags picked up their last win against the Huskies as Fairfield took a 5-4 decision on April 24, 2006, against a UCONN team that would finish the season with 39 wins. In that game, the Stags used a three-run fifth inning to hang on for the victory. George Lisi homered for Fairfield and Peter Allen drove in the two go-ahead runs with a double. All-time the Stags are 15-57-1 against the Huskies.
THE HUSKIES SCOUTING REPORT: The Huskies enter their five-game home stand with a 14-15 record after dropping two out of three in their first full American Athletic series to Cincinnati. Sophomore Willy Yahn has built off his Freshmen All-America season and is the team's leading hitter with a .315 average and .469 slugging percentage. The only other hitter with a .300 batting average is senior Jack Sundberg who is hitting at a .311 clip after being named to the AAC Second Team last season. The Huskies are a powerful team, leading their conference in doubles and ranking second in home runs per game.
UP NEXT: The Stags will go against one of the hottest teams in the MAAC when they host a Niagara team who is currently 6-3 in the conference. The Stags and the Purple Eagles play their first game at Alumni Diamond on Saturday at noon.
