Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Gavin Wallace and Kyle Dube continued the pitching excellence of the Stags as each pitched deep into their start and allowed just one earned run apiece as the Fairfield University baseball team completed their second series sweep of Iona in the last four years, taking 2-1 and 7-1 decisions on the road.
Fresh off of his first career conference win, Wallace built off of that decision and out-dueled Iona's Joe DeRosa in an old fashioned pitching dominated affair. Fairfield's (12-16, 4-2 MAAC) sophomore threw the full seven innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out five batters.
The biggest of those seven innings came in his final frame as Iona (7-21, 2-4 MAAC) loaded the bases with one out, but just like in Friday's craziness, the Fairfield pitching staff got out of the jam. Nearing his 120 pitch total, Wallace got a strike out and then forced Kyle DiVico to ground out to end the inning and clinch their first MAAC series victory of 2016, taking a 2-1 contest.
All of the three runs were scored in the first two innings, as Kevin Radziewicz drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the first frame and Iona countered with a RBI single from Travis Mistretta.
Mac Crispino led off the second inning, launching the ninth pitch of his at-bat to left center for a double. He would later score on a Jack Gethings sacrifice fly to center.
Iona's Carmine Palummo began the second inning with a triple to center, but was thrown out at the plate by Crispino. Palummo would be the last Iona base runner to reach third base until the thrilling seventh inning.
In the series finale, Wallace gave the ball to Dube and the junior right-hander picked up right where Wallace left off. The final stat line for Dube would read eight innings pitched, five hits and one run allowed with four strikeouts as the Stags completed the sweep with a convincing 7-1 victory.
Again, the Stags jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning as Jake Salpietro drove in a run with a single and Brendan Tracy lined a double down the right field line to score Fairfield's second run.
Fairfield would add another run on in the second as Crispino led off the inning with a single through the right side and would score two wild pitches later.
Friday's hero Mitch Williams drove in his third run of the series with a single up the middle in the sixth and Drew Arciuolo capped the scoring with a RBI single in the seventh.
That was more than enough run support for Dube who retired the first seven hitters and did not allow a hit in his final two innings, in a bounce back performance.
With their first MAAC series victory of the season to build on, the Stags have one midweek game in the next seven days as they travel to Storrs, Conn., for a game against UCONN on Tuesday at 3pm.
