Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – The future of the Fairfield pitching staff could be very bright. If you consider coming into this game, the four pitchers used had a combined 37 innings of collegiate experience and held the eighth-ranked team in the country to four runs (for the second-straight game) you could see that promise. Unfortunately, the opposing experienced pitcher had the best start of his career, as left hander Ryan Williamson struck out a career-high 10 batters in 5.1 innings as the No. 8 Wolfpack completed the two-game sweep with a 4-0 victory.

Williamson had to work out of trouble in nearly every inning as the Stags (3-5) got the lead runner to reach base in the first four innings. The Stags were actually out-hitting No. 8 NC State (12-2) through the first five innings with Kevin Radziewicz picking up two of his three hits during that span and Jake Salpietro slashing a double to lead off the second. However, Williamson made the big pitch when he needed to. The left hander forced two double plays in the first two innings and struck out the side in the third inning, on his way for his best pitching performance of his three year career.

The Fairfield southpaw, Mike Bonaiuto, matched Williamson pitch for pitch during his first start since 2014. Bonaiuto allowed just two hits (both singles) in his three innings of work while striking out two.

The Wolfpack could not scratch across a run until the bottom of the fifth, when they started a two-out rally. Brock Deathridge went the opposite way and laced a run scoring triple to put the game's first run on the board. He would later score on a fielding error.

The Stags had their chances as they got runners on in every inning except the seventh, but could not cross the plate. Radziewicz led the Stags with his second career three hit day. Salpietro followed up with a two-hit performance.

NC State gave some separation room in the eighth when Andrew Knizner crossed the plate less than a second before Drew Arciuolo threw out ACC Player of the Week Chance Shepard out at third which would have ended the inning.

Fairfield will look to get back into the win column when they begin a traditional three-game series against Charlotte on Friday with first pitch coming at 3pm.
