Baseball Continues ACC Trip With Two Games At NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – After three games against the sixth-ranked team in the country, the Fairfield University baseball team will have one day to recoup and then travel to the state's capital for a two game series with the eighth-ranked team in the country the NC State Wolfpack. This will be the fifth-time these two teams have met in their program history and the first since 1986. Both the Tuesday and Wednesday games will have a 3pm start time.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: No. 6 North Carolina swept the Stags in the three-game series over the weekend to push their winning streak to nine-games. Five different Stags recorded three hits over the weekend, with freshman Tim Zeng leading the team with a .333 batting average against the best pitching he has seen in his career. Pitching dominated the first game for the Stags, who almost pulled off the biggest upset in their program history as they led Carolina by one with one out in the ninth inning before succumbing to a walk-off walk in the game in the 13th. Kyle Dube led the staff in that opening game by allowing just one earned run in his 5.2 innings. Mike Bonaiuto threw the most among the relievers who notched shutout innings, not allowing a run in his three innings of work.

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR: The Stags gave No. 6 North Carolina as much of a scare as the Tar Heels could possibly have experienced, with Fairfield leading until a close call at the plate which would have ended the game. Although the Stags are now 0-10 against the Tar Heels, three of those losses have come by one run. The first two games the two teams ever played in 1980 were also decided by just one run.

FAIRFIELD VS NC STATE: The Stags and the Wolfpack will meet for the first time in nearly three decades, and just the fifth time in program history. NC State has taken the previous four meetings, but two of those contests decided by just four runs. The series started back in 1984.

THE WOLFPACK SCOUTING REPORT: NC State's 10-2 record and seven-game winning streak has them ranked eighth in the country in the DIBaseball.com rankings. The Wolfpack has been known for their power during the early stretch of the 2016 campaign, ranked in the top-three in the ACC in home runs, slugging percentage, and hits. Chance Shepard is the power bat to highlight as he broke the program record with six home runs during a six-game span and is now second in the country with seven long balls. The best overall hitter on the team is Preston Palmeiro who leads the team in hits, runs, and doubles. His success should come as no surprise to Wolfpack fans as he is the son of former MLB slugger Rafael Palmeiro.

UP NEXT: The Stags will conclude their North Carolina trip with a three-game series at Charlotte, N.C.
