Box Score 2 NEWARK, Del. – Jake Salpietro clubbed three home runs in the double header, bringing his team-high total to five, but it was not enough as the Stags were swept in their two final games in Delaware, 4-3 and 11-6. Once again, the Stags held a lead in each game including a 6-0 start to the nightcap before falling.
Salpietro got his day started quickly blasting his third home run of the season, and the third Fairfield (4-11) homer in the series to start the scoring for the Stags in the opener. It was the second-straight game that Fairfield scored the first run of the contest.
Kyle Dube cruised through the first 10 batters, but ran into trouble in the third. The junior would allow RBI doubles to Nick Tierno and Jordan Glover which allowed the Blue Hens (15-5) to take a 2-1 lead. A sacrifice fly later on in the inning capped the scoring which gave the home side a 3-1 lead.
The Stags fought back in the sixth inning as three-straight singles by Mac Crispino, Brendan Tracy, and Tim Zeng loaded the bases. Two runs ended up scoring with the benefit of a wild pitch and a throwing error by the catcher which scooted across the tying run.
With runners on the corners in the bottom half of the inning, rookie John Signore came in relief for the Stags and got the ground ball he wanted. However, Kyle Baker was quick enough to reach base safely which allowed Nick Patten to cross the plate with the go-ahead run, making the score 4-3 in favor of Delaware.
That is all Signore would allow as the rookie right hander went 2.2 innings, did not allow a run, and struck out two. The outing lowered Signore's ERA to 1.29 during his first 14-collegiate innings.
After Jack Gethings started the ninth inning with a single off the Delaware closer Colman Vila, freshman Kyle Hinton came into relief and earned his first career save. His battery mate Adam Rapp was instrumental in the save as he gunned down Drew Arciuolo trying to steal second base as the tying run.
Trying to salvage the final game of the series, the Stags once again relied on the power of Salpietro who would blast two home runs in the final contest. His home run in the fourth inning doubled the Fairfield lead at 2-0 and his two-run shot in the fifth capped a four-run inning making the score 6-0.
started off quickly, just like they did in the first two games of the series. The Stags jumped on the Blue Hens, striking for a first inning run, as Tracy cracked a RBI single which scored Zeng to make the score 1-0. Salpietro's long ball came after a RBI double from Troy Scocca and a run scoring single by Tracy.
But Delaware, like they have done all series long, rallied.
Gavin Wallace kept the Blue Hen hitters guessing through the first four innings and was on his way to having the best start of his career, allowing just one hit through the first 15 batters. The Blue Hens found out the sophomore right hander in their half of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on five hits, which tied the game. Diaz Nardo had the lone extra base hit of the stanza which scored the third run of the game for Delaware. Calvin Scott would tie the game with a RBI single which set the momentum for the next inning.
Kevin Mohollen tripled in Delaware's seventh run of the game with Tierno adding an insurance run with a single.
That is all the Blue Hens would need in taking the second contest 11-6. The CAA squad has now won 11 of their last 13 games.
Of course, Salpietro led the Fairfield offense attack finishing his best series of the season. Salpietro recorded four hits, three of those leaving the ball park.
Over his last seven games, Salpietro is batting .414 (12-for-29) with four home runs and seven RBI.
Drew Arciuolo and Tracy added four hits in the doubleheader with Zeng and Scocca adding three.
The Stags will end their 15-game road trip when they return to Alumni Diamond for their home opener against Hartford on Tuesday at 3pm.
