Stags Close out Non-Conference Play

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team will play their final non-conference game at the University of Connecticut on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Fairfield (4-3) vs. University of Connecticut (5-1): The Stags and Huskies will meet on Saturday for the 14th time in program history. Fairfield is 4-9 against Connecticut and has lost the last four matchups versus the in-state foe. Last season, the Stags dropped a 6-4 decision at home on March 18.

Scouting the Huskies: Connecticut is 5-1 this season after starting the season 4-0 and ranking as high as 18th in the national polls. The Huskies dropped their first game of the season to UMass on March 12 to knock them out of the Top 20, but are still receiving votes in both the IWLCA Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse Poll. In their latest outing, Connecticut bounced back with a 13-6 win over William & Mary on March 16. Senior attack Katherine Finkelston leads the Huskies with 27 points and 24 goals. And in net, senior goalkeeper Shannon Nee has 57 saves, a .548 save percentage, and an 8.21 goals against average. The senior was named the Big East Goalkeeper of the Year last season and ranks among the top keepers again this season.

Last Time Out: The team saw their three game winning streak snapped at Denver on Sunday afternoon in a 10-6 defeat.

The Stags defense played a great game causing Denver to turn the ball over 10 times. Junior Scarlett Sulliman led the way with three individual caused turnovers, while Riley Hellstein, Melissa Laible and Chelsey Sidaras each added two. Sidaras earned the start in net making four saves against 19 shots.

Hellstein was the offensive leader with three points, she was followed by Alex Fehmel with two points off a goal and an assist. Colleen Reynolds, Jenna Fuchs, and Julieanne Mascera each tallied one point on the day.

Racking Up the Points: Two Stags now have double digit point streaks after Sunday's loss at Denver. Julieanne Mascera tallied one goal to bring her streak to 19. And junior Alex Fehmel had two points in the last game and has now tallied at least one point in 28 straight contests. Maeve Quinn's point streak ended at 11 after not registering a point in Sunday's game.

Hellstein's on Fire: Junior Riley Hellstein has three games scoring at least six goals this season, including a seven goal performance against New Hampshire. In the win, the midfielder had a career-high nine points, also adding two assists on the day. She is Fairfield's leader with 31 points and 28 goals this season. The junior also ranks among the nation's best in several statistical categories.

Nation Notice: Two other Stags rank in the nation's Top 25 in individual statistics. Senior attack Julieanne Mascera ranks 11th in the nation posting a .714 free position percentage. And senior goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras is 25th best in the country with 54 saves this season.

Looking Ahead: Fairfield will play their first conference game Friday, March 25 at Canisius.
