Stags Use Second Half to Surge Past Villanova

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team won their second straight game on Sunday afternoon topping Villanova, 4-1, at University Field.

The Stags used a second half surge to power past the visiting Wildcats. Led by a pair of goals and an assist by senior Julie de Paeuw, Fairfield scored four unanswered goals in the final 18 minutes of the game to grab their third win of the season.

The first half had a total of 11 shots and 11 penalty corners as Fairfield led in both categories 8-3. But after the first 35 minutes neither team had found the back of the net.

In the second half, the Wildcats struck first. Francesca Bello put herself right near the far post and deflected in a pass from Courtney Devine for the first goal of the game.

Fairfield seized momentum from that point on. In the 53rd minute, the Villanova keeper made a diving save, but could not control the rebound. Emma Clark got her stick on the ball and shot it right in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Less than three minutes later, Kaley McMullen passed to de Paeuw who was in the perfect position to fire a high shot over a charging keeper to give the Stags a one goal advantage. Then in the 64th minute, the keeper was out of position and the senior midfielder took advantage by firing a hard shot from the top of the circle for her second goal.

The final score came in the 67th minute after de Paeuw stole the ball back from a Wildcat defender on the near sideline. Jamie Appelberg was open in the middle of circle and de Pauew made a crisp pass right to the forward for the fourth score of the day.

Caitlin Bennett recorded all 70 minutes in cage after earning her second straight start. The senior posted seven saves against 15 total shots.

After their first 2-0 weekend, the Stags will jump back into conference play, playing at Bryant and at Siena next Friday and Sunday.
