Stags Drop MAAC Contest in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairfield University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Bryant on Friday afternoon. The loss dropped the Stags to 1-1 in MAAC play.

Fairfield got on the board first with a goal from Ann Burgoyne. Julie de Paeuw rocketed a shot off a penalty corner and Burgoyne was there to deflect the ball into the back of the net. In the process, the senior tied the all-time Fairfield points record with 112 points.

Just a few minutes later, the Bulldogs answered back with a goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1. But for the remaining 15 minutes the game was scoreless to send the contest into halftime all square at 1-1.

In the second half, the Stags and Bulldogs combined for just six shots, all from Fairfield, and were unable to find the back of the net to break the tie.

In overtime, it took just less than 10 minutes for the home side to notch the game-winning goal. Emily Perryman dribbled to the top right of the circle and fired a shot low for the score.

The Stags outshot the Bulldogs 14-11 on the day and had double the amount of penalty corners (8-4). Caitlin Bennett finished with two saves in net, both coming in the first 35 minutes.

Fairfield continues MAAC play on the road with a matchup at Siena on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
