Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The field hockey team dropped a disappointing 3-2 loss to Hofstra on Wednesday. The loss snapped a two game winning streak for the Stags.

Fairfield was first on the board when Emily McCauley recorded her first goal of the season in the 13th minute. McCauley found herself in the middle of the circle with a clear shot on goal and capitalized to put the Stags up 1-0.

Hofstra answered six minutes later when Stella Schoen took a hard shot from the top of the circle that was deflected in by Colby Hussong to tie the game at 1-1. The Pride would tack on one more before halftime to take a 2-1 lead. Charlotte Loehr received a quick pass from Stella Schoen and Loehr put it in for the goal.

Right out the break, Hofstra would add on another when Claudia Marin Samper tipped in a pass from Simca Schoen. This gave the Pride a 3-1 advantage with 30 minutes to play.

The Stags would try to rally in the 55th minute when Jamie Appelberg deflected a hard pass from McCauley right into the net. Fairfield now trailed 3-2 with 15 minutes to play. They would squander an excellent scoring opportunity on an Ann Burgoyne breakaway and pass to Kaitlyn Taddeo who was well defended and shot the ball just wide of cage, hitting the side of the net. Fairfield would have two penalty corners after that, but were unable to score as Hofstra held on for the 3-2 win.

Senior midfielder Emily McCauley had her best game of the season scoring wise, tallying a goal and an assist to lead the Stags with three points on the day. Sophomore Jamie Appelberg scored her second goal of the season and is tied for second on the team with five points on the year.

Fairfield fired off nine shots on the day with six on goal. Leading the way was Burgoyne with two shots on goal. Caitlin Bennett played excellent in cage, facing 16 total shots and recording eight saves.

The Stags will try to bounce back after this loss when they travel to Rhode Island to take on Providence College on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
