Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team recorded its second victory of the season with a convincing 2-1 win over Drexel University in Philadelphia on Friday night. It marked just the second win against Drexel in 10 tries.
The Stags controlled the pace for much of the game and were able to put the first points on the board when junior Julie de Paeuw knocked in her first goal of the season after she capitalized off a short corner by senior Emily McCauley. It was McCauley's first point of the season as she recorded an assist on the play.
Junior Ann Burgoyne tallied her sixth goal of the season just before halftime to put Fairfield up 2-0. Burgoyne was able to collect a rebound off the keeper right in front of the cage and finish it for the score.
Fairfield nearly went home with a shutout on Friday night, but with under two minutes to play the Dragons were able to score out of scrum in front of the cage after a penalty corner. Alison McCardell was awarded the goal and put the only points on the board for Drexel.
The Stags defense held strong as they faced 17 shots and nine penalty corners from the Dragons, but just allowed five of those shots on goal. Junior Caitlin Bennett earned her first win of the season and recorded three saves in cage. Jaclyn Gallagher made a defensive save for the Stags, the first of her career.
Freshman Ruth Smalbraak fired off four shots, all on cage, to lead Fairfield in that statistic. Burgoyne added three shots of her own, de Paeuw had two shots, while Gallagher and Ariane von Schenck each had one.
Fairfield will have a day off before returning to game action against Villanova on Sunday at noon.
