Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Edged By #3 UConn

STORRS, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team faced its fourth ranked opponent this season when it took the pitch against #3 UConn on Friday afternoon. The Stags put forth a gutty performance that saw them tied with the Huskies at halftime before yielding two second-half goals in a 3-1 setback.

The 2026 schedule wrapped a pair of nationally-ranked opponents around the regular-season schedule, opening with #9 Syracuse University and finishing the regular-season slate with UConn. And in between, Fairfield also played #18 Yale University in addition to defeating #20 Monmouth University.

Today, the Stags were continually tested in the back, facing a consistent Huskies attack that finished with 16 shots, 11 of which were on target. Goalkeeper Georgia McDade was brilliant in between the posts with nine saves, several of which were full extension in guarding the corners.

After a scoreless first quarter, UConn was the first team to put something on the scoreboard when Milou Heuker, who started the chance with a penalty corner insertion, deflected the ball into the upper corner with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Fairfield also took advantage of its first penalty corner of the game by converting the opportunity into the tying goal. Alice Pifferi put the ball in play off the corner where the ball went to the top of the circle. By the end of the play, Kylie Corcoran redirected the ball in the upper corner of the target, padding her team leading goal total to 11.

After intermission, UConn regained the lead when Lene Reiche pushed the ball to the back of the goal eight minutes into the third quarter. Once again, the Huskies set up the scoring play following a penalty corner, one of nine taken by the home team on the afternoon.

Freshman Lucy Zich finished up the scoring with the team's third goal which was once again at the end of a penalty corner. Zich was able to find the back of the net in the 54th minute of the contest.

"We are grateful that we were able to play a game of this caliber as a springboard into the CAA tournament," Head Coach Laura Gebhart said. "I thought we played well and put together a gritty performance. Playing a top-ranked team in the nation as we prepare for the postseason is so valuable."

Fairfield will move onto the CAA Championship which begins on Wednesday, November 4 with the Stags taking on Northeastern University at noon. The CAA Championship will be hosted by Drexel University.
