Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – If the Stags are going to make the MAAC playoffs season, they are going to need to show the heart and will they did on Sunday. They just need to finish. Trailing 7-2 with one out in the seventh, the Stags scored four runs with three coming with two outs. The comeback would fall short as Rider tacked on a run in the eighth inning and held on to complete the series sweep against the Stags with an 8-6 final score.
Sal Ciccone began the seventh inning rally for the Stags with a walk and would score on Mac Crispino's RBI single to center field. After a lineout, Mitch Williams walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run, and Brendan Tracy had the big knock with a two-run single to right.
After Rider (13-15, 5-1 MAAC) added a run in the eighth inning with a Greg Fazio walk with the bases loaded, Fairfield (7-20, 3-9 MAAC) got the benefit of a couple of walks in the ninth inning to put the potential go-ahead run at the plate but a strikeout and a ground ball back to the pitcher would end the game.
Fairfield got on the board first with two runs scoring off a Rider error in the second inning. Crispino and Dean Sadik who both singled in the frame would cross the plate with the first two runs of the game.
The Broncs tied the game with a two-run double from Eric Strano and added four runs in the fourth which was highlighted by a triple by James Locklear with the bases loaded, which would score all four runs.
The big inning came one frame after the Stags had the chance to tie and take the lead in the fourth, as they loaded the bases with two outs on the benefit by singles from Drew Arciuolo and Alex Witkus. Fairfield could not get on the scoreboard, as the inning ended with a fielder's choice.
The Stags had to use six pitchers, with Joe Randall, Tucker Panciera, and Andrew Gallagher all not allowing a run in their appearances. Panciera had his second-straight impressive showing as he went 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit.
Crispino and Witkus were the only Stags to notch multiple hits in the contest. Fairfield only struck out five times in the game including just two against the Broncs' starter, Nick Margevicius, who had 10 strikeouts in his last start.
Fairfield will take a much needed break from conference action as they are scheduled to host UCONN on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
