Stags Ready For Showdown with Marist In Final Home Game

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – They did it once, now the Stags will try to upset the nine-time defending MAAC Champions again. For the first time in over nine years, the Stags have taken two-straight against the Red Foxes in the series after Fairfield upset Marist in early January. On Monday night, the two teams will meet in a game that could mean a lot when it comes down to seeding in the upcoming MAAC tournament. After Fairfield's loss to Siena, the Stags now must win at least two of their final three games to have a chance at the three seed in the conference tournament. The journey for the Stags start at Alumni Hall at 7pm.

SENIOR CITIZEN APPRECIATION NIGHT: For tonight's game, all fans 65 years or older will receive free admission.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Fairfield is coming off their first home loss since January 4, as they dropped a 54-47 decision to Siena. It was just Fairfield's second loss to the Saints in the last 10 outings. Felicia DaCruz ignited a 10-0 run with her team trailing by 11 on her senior day. DaCruz drained a three, picked up a steal, and dished out an assist all in a 40 second span. DaCruz would finish with six points, three assists, four rebounds, and tied a career-high with three steals in the loss. The Stags trailed by as many as 11 in the second half before going on their longest run of the game. Fairfield held the Saints to four field goals in the final nine minutes, but was capped by a Margot Hetzke 3-pointer with less than two minutes left. The loss snapped Fairfield's six-game home winning streak, the second straight year they have done that.

ARID DROUGHTS: Despite the loss, the Stags held Siena to without a field goal for 5:08 during the second half, the 18th time this season that Fairfield has held an opponent to without a field goal in a five minute span. Fairfield held Manhattan to no field goals for 11:32 and Saint Peter's for 11:23 for their largest runs of the season.

THE COMEBACK KIDS: In 10 of the 12 wins this season, Fairfield had to comeback from a second half deficit. The 10 wins after trailing at some point in the second half is tied for the highest number in the country (Tennessee and Cleveland State). Fairfield trailed by 10 in the first half against Rider after coming back from a 12-point deficit against Saint Peter's. The 12-point deficit against Saint Peter's was the largest deficit overcome since Feb 24, 2012. The Stags have now come back to win three games when trailing by 10 or more.

FAIRFIELD IN FINAL HOME GAME: The Stags are 25-8 in the final home contest of the season in their program history. The Stags had a 10-game winning streak in these chances that ended in 2008. Fairfield has won every other game since Joe Frager, alternating wins in each of his previous seven seasons. (The Stags defeated Manhattan last season).

FAIRFIELD VS MARIST:  The two teams will be closing out the season series on Monday night and meet for the 47th time in program history. Marist is the only MAAC team to have a winning record against the Stags (26-20), and are 12-1 on the road vs the Stags in the last 13 meetings. The Stags made history in the last meeting against Marist, becoming the first MAAC team in over nine years to defeat the Red Foxes on the road in back-to-back games. The win was the first of the calendar year for the Stags and was one of the more exciting games of the MAAC season. The game featured six lead changes in the final two minutes of the game, but Fairfield took the decisive lead when Samantha Cooper nailed the game-winning jumper with three seconds left. Fairfield held the lead until the 13:05 mark in the second half. Marist had the chance to win the game at the buzzer but Sydney Coffey's layup slid off of the rim. Cooper led the team with 13 points in her first meeting against the Red Foxes while Kelsey Carey had 12 points in her first career start. Felicia DaCruz has 15 assists combined in Fairfield's last two victories, while Casey Smith had a team-high five dishes in her first game against Marist. In the last win, Fairfield out-rebounded Marist 39-29 their best margin of the year.

SCOUTING THE RED FOXES:  Marist narrowly avoided doing something they have not done in a decade, lose three-straight conference games as they came back to defeat Iona in a nationally televised affair. However, after the Fairfield loss, Marist went on a stretch where they won nine of their next 10 games. The nine-time defending MAAC Champions have only dropped one road game in the conference (Quinnipiac). Just like almost every year during the Red Foxes historic nine-year run, they have built their team around defense, which currently ranks first in the MAAC. Opponents are shooting just 35 percent from the floor, which is the 19th lowest number in the nation. Offensively, once again the Red Foxes are very disciplined checking in with the 24th best assist-turnover ratio in the country while committing the third fewest personal fouls among all schools (12.2 per game). When they get to the line, Marist is shooting 77 percent from the charity stripe, sixth best in the country and only two percent from first place. Marist has players to fill every role. Tori Jarosz is one of the best post players in the conference and lead the team with 17.9 points per game, second in the MAAC. She is also shooting 54 percent from the field. Madeline Blais is their threat from long range, second in the league shooting 43 percent from behind the arc. Sydney Coffey is their slashing guard with 12.1 points per game.

UP NEXT: Fairfield will hit the road for the final two games of the season starting with a clash of the offensive force, the Iona Gaels. The Gaels are the team currently tied with Fairfield for the number three seed. The two teams will fight for that third spot on Thursday at 7pm.
