FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team was well represented at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Award Show on Thursday night. The Stags claimed three major awards and named five players to All-MAAC Teams.
Headlining the awards was junior Julie de Paeuw who was named the 2015 MAAC Player of the Year. The junior was a staple at the forward position all season long making 15 starts for the Stags. de Paeuw tied for second on the team in goals (5), third in points (13), and tied for fourth in assists (3). The native of Belgium was also named to the All-MAAC First Team.
Ann Burgoyne won her second straight Offensive Player of the Year Award, claiming the distinction from the MAAC after receiving the same honor from the America East Conference. Burgoyne led the team and the conference in goals (17) and points (35). She also ranks fourth nationally in goals per game (1.06) and is tied for seventh in the nation in points per game (2.19). The forward also earned a spot on the All-MAAC First Team.
Rounding out the trio of award winners is Ruth Smalbraak, who was named the 2015 MAAC Rookie of the Year. The freshman was second on the team in goals (5), assists (5), and points (15). During league play she ranked in the top three in points, points per game, goals, and goals per game. Smalbraak was also named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
Joining Smalbraak on the Second Team are defenders Erin Buckley and Maclaine Matties. Buckley was tied for the team lead with two defensive saves this year and was a consistent player for the Stags all season long, appearing in all 16 games. The sophomore also chipped in on offense adding four goals and two assists.
Matties joins her teammates on the All-MAAC Second Team after enjoying another impressive season on defense. The junior appeared in all 16 games for the Stags and added one assist.
In addition, six Stags were named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Among the names are Corrine Baliga, Erin Buckley, Ann Burgoyne, Danielle Melchionna, Bridget Miles, and Kaitlyn Taddeo. These student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and are a part of the 63 member 2015 MAAC Field Hockey All-Academic Team.
Fairfield plays in the first round of the MAAC Tournament on Friday, Nov. 6 against host Monmouth at 11 a.m.
