BRONX, N.Y. – Fordham University scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overtake Fairfield University, 5-4, this evening at Houlihan Park.
Seven different Stags had hits, including junior Alex Witkus who was 2-for-4 with a double.
Fairfield (20-16) received a strong start from sophomore Joe Randall who went 5.0 innings for his longest outing of the year in the no-decision. He allowed just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. After giving up two runs and two hits in the bottom of the first, Randall held Fordham to just one hit during the rest of his outing.
Fordham (17-21) put its first three base runners of the night on and scored on an RBI ground out by Charles Galiano. The Rams made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Rob McCunney. That's all that the Rams would plate as Randall was able to get out of the jam.
Sophomore Brendan Tracy put the Stags on the board in the top of the second as he led off with a solo shot to right field for his first collegiate homerun. Junior Sebastian Salvo followed with a triple to the right field corner and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Billy Zolga to tie the game, 2-2.
With one out in the top of the third, Witkus doubled to the leftfield corner and was able to move up on a fly ball by Ryan Plourde. Jack Giannini then beat out a chopper to third base which allowed Witkus to score and put the Stags ahead, 3-2.
Fordham threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but reliever Tucker Panciera was able to pitch his way out of the inning. Panciera settled down in the seventh, retiring the Rams in order, striking out two batters.
In the top of the eighth, the speedy Witkus beat out a groundball to third base to lead off the inning. Plourde then extended the lead to 4-2 as he tripled off the base of the wall in deep left center, just missing a homerun, to score Witkus.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Tim Swatek reached on a two-out single and stole second base but junior Andrew Gallagher got the final out to end the threat.
Fordham loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Mark Donadio worked the count full and drew the walk, forcing in a run to pull the Rams within 4-3. Joseph Runco then delivered a two-RBI single down the right field line to send the Rams off with a win. Junior Jeremy Soule took the loss.
Fairfield continues non-league action tomorrow when it travels to Sacred Heart University at 3:30pm at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
