Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Yale

WEST HAVEN, Conn.  – The Fairfield University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Yale University at historic Yale Field this evening in non-league action. The Stags took game one by a margin of 6-2 while downing the Bulldogs, 10-5, in the second game to complete the sweep.

Senior Ryan Plourde was a combined 4-for-7 with a double and two runs scored while classmate Rob LoPinto was a combined 3-for-7 with a double, two RBIs, and four runs scored.

Fairfield (14-13) resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend when it travels to Niagara University for a three-game series.

Game One Recap: Junior Billy Zolga went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to help lift the Stags to a 6-2 win. Zolga put Fairfield on the board in the top of the second with a three-run homer that sailed over the fence in left center. Jack Giannini had led off the inning with a single while LoPinto was hit by a pitch to set the table for Zolga.

Senior Brian Murphy gave the Stags a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth with a two-out single which scored LoPinto from second base. Yale got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Green Campbell to cut the deficit in half.

Fairfield loaded the bases in the top of sixth inning. Dan Hopkins was hit by a pitch, the third Fairfield batter that was hit in the inning, to force in a run. Dean Sadik extended the Stags' lead to 6-2 with a sacrifice fly.

Junior Tucker Panciera improved to 4-0 the year, going 3.1 innings and scattering one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Junior Andrew Gallagher tossed 1.2 innings of relief while juniors Anthony DiMauro and Jeremy Soule tossed scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

 

Game Two Recap: The Stags used a seven-run fifth inning to help overtake the Bulldogs, 10-5, in the nightcap. Plourde went 3-for-4 in the contest.

Yale opened up a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Fairfield got one of the runs back in the top of the third inning. LoPinto led off with a double and scored on a single by Plourde.

The Stags got the bats going in the fifth inning. After a sac fly by Giannini made it 4-3, Hopkins drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to force in a run and tie the game. Witkus followed with another walk to force in the go-ahead run. Sal Ciccone ripped a single to left center to drive in a pair of runs and make it 7-4. LoPinto followed with a single through the left side to drive in two more runs and make it 9-4.

Yale (12-15) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Stags got it back in the seventh as Alex Witkus singled and later scored on a single by Sadik.

Junior Ian Tresser (1-0) picked up the win after tossing a perfect inning of relief. Freshman Kyle Dube made his first collegiate start.
