Men's Basketball Falls to Saint Peter's 65-62

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – For the third time in as many games, it came down to one shot. And for the third time in three games, Desi Washington made the shot. The guard netted a three-point field goal with 1.4 seconds remaining to lift Saint Peter's University to a 65-62 overtime win over the Fairfield University men's basketball team in the first round of the 2014 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship.

The shot overshadowed a well-played game by the Stags, and another outstanding performance by senior Maurice Barrow. The senior scored all four of the team's points in overtime, including the tying basket with six seconds remaining. Barrow finished the contest with a team-best 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half and overtime.

Defensively, it was the game that it was supposed to be as it featured the top two defensive teams in the conference. Neither team reached 60 points in regulation as the game was tied at halftime 30-30 and at the end of regulation 58-58. The Stags held the Peacocks to 37 percent from the floor overall.

Fairfield opened the game with a five straight points, courtesy of an opening layup from Justin Jenkins and a three-point field goal from Marcus Gilbert. Saint Peter's put its first points on the board with a three-pointer from Chris Burke at the 17:43 mark. After another jumper from Gilbert pushed the lead to 7-3, the Peacocks put together a string of nine points that gave the designated home team a 12-7 edge with 13:24 remaining.

The Stags battled back to tie the score at 16-16 as Jenkins scored four points and Steve Johnston added three points in a 9-4 spurt. Jamel Fields regained the lead for Saint Peter's but another Johnston three-pointer gave Fairfield a 19-18 edge, the team's first lead since the 17-minute mark. The Peacocks slowly rebuilt its five point lead, holding a 26-21 advantage with 2:13 on the clock and 28-23 with 1:34 remaining. The Stags finished the half with a 7-2 run which sent the two teams into the locker room tied at 30-30. Johnston's buzzer-beating three-pointer, his third of the game, provided the tying points. The guard finished the half as the top scorer for both teams with nine points.

The second half was as closely contested as a game could be as the both teams kept the other from making any significant runs over the opening eight minutes of the half. Neither team led by more than three points with Saint Peter's collecting 35-32 and 37-34 leads before the Stags would battle back to tie the game. In the first eight minutes of the second half, there were three ties and four lead changes and the game remained tied at 43-43 with 11 minutes left.

Barrow broke the tie with a free throw and Coleman Johnson followed with a jumper to provide a little daylight for the Stags at 46-43. Marvin Dominique made two free throws to bring the Peacocks within a point, but a three-pointer from Barrow and a running one-hander from KJ Rose provide the Stags with a six-point advantage at 51-45 with 6:57 on the clock.

The Peacocks came right back with six unanswered points, the last of which came off a layup from Washington that tied the game at 51-51. With the game still knotted at 53-53, Johnston was fouled on a three-point try and promptly made all three charity tosses. Washington responded with back-to-back jumpers to push Saint Peter's in front by a point 57-56. Marcus Gilbert was fouled on the Stags' next possession and made both charity tosses to give his team a 58-57 edge with a minute remaining.

Dominique went to the line with a chance to put the Peacocks in the lead but missed the first and made the second to tie the game. Gilbert had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but the ball rolled off the rim, setting up overtime.

Barrow gave the Stags a two-point lead with the first points of the extra period. The Peacocks tallied the next four points on a pair of free throws from Quadir Welton and a layup from Rolle, making it a 62-60 lead. Barrow tied the game with six seconds remaining, setting up Washington's game winner.
