Women's Basketball Season Ends with Tough Loss to UIC in WBI Semifinal

CHICAGO – The sixth-seeded Fairfield University women's basketball team's postseason run came to an end tonight as the Stags fell to the fourth-seeded University of Illinois-Chicago, 74-44, in the semifinal of the 2014 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). Fairfield finishes the year at 22-11 overall.

In her final game as a Stag, senior Katie Cizynski posted her 14th double-double of the year, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She concludes her career with 1,197 points, good for 18th all-time, and 720 rebounds, good for 11th all-time. Cizynski will also leave the program in the top-20 in career field goals made, field goal percentage, blocks, games played, and games started.

Senior Alexys Vazquez tallied six points, including two three-pointers in her last game in a Stags uniform. Vazquez finished the year with 94 three-point field goals made setting the new single-season standard. She netted 237 three-pointers during her career which is good for second all-time.

Senior Brittany Obi-Tabot posted eight points and three rebounds in her final game while classmate Christelle Akon-Akech had six points and two rebounds. Senior Casey Grace added a rebound and an assist.

UIC (25-9) set the tone early, out-scoring the Stags, 7-2, over the first three minutes of play. Fairfield pulled within 11-8 on a bucket by Cizynski at 12:14. The Flames countered with an 11-0 run in a span of 1:39 to pull away from the Stags. Fairfield cut into the UIC lead late in the half as a jumper by Cizynski at 5:48 made it 27-19. The Flames would go on to lead by as much as 19 points in the waning minutes and take a 46-23 lead into halftime. The Flames controlled in the second half as well as the Stags were unable to get into rhythm offensively.

Sophomore Lizzy Ball tied a career-high with five assists while junior Felicia DaCruz finished with four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Kristin Schatzlein  had eight points. Freshman Kelsey Carey had a rebound while classmate Kristine Miller added two points and a rebound.
