QUEENS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University baseball team fell to St. John's University, 7-3, this afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Jack Giannini went 2-for-5 with two RBI while Ryan Plourde went 2-for-4.
St. John's (9-10) took an early 3-0 lead, scoring once in the first inning and twice in the second inning. The Red Storm broke it open in the bottom of the sixth inning with a four-run effort.
Fairfield answered in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Sal Ciccone got things started with a leadoff single and then advanced on a wild pitch. He later scored on an error to put the Stags on the board. Fairfield was able to load the bases on singles by Alex Witkus, Rob LoPinto, and Dean Sadik. With one out, Giannini singled through the left side to score Witkus and LoPinto. After a pitching change, St. John's was able to get out of the inning to maintain a 7-3 lead.
Rookie Ryan O'Connor made his first collegiate start, going one inning. Junior Anthony DiMauro pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out two batters.
Fairfield (3-9) returns to action tomorrow when it faces NJIT at 6:30pm. It is a designated home game for the Stags, however, the game will be played at Fordham's Houlihan Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
