BEL AIR, Md. – The Fairfield University baseball team dropped the series finale to the University of Delaware, 4-0, this afternoon.
It was another pitcher's duel for the Stags as both teams were scoreless until the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Delaware's EJ Stoltzfus reached on an error to start the inning. He then came around to score on a single by Alex Mottle to make it 1-0. Another Fairfield error in the bottom of the seventh led to three runs as the Blue Hens (9-8) opened a 4-0 lead.
The Stags (3-8) threatened in the eighth inning as Ryan Plourde reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch but the Blue Hens got out of the inning. Delaware's Chad Martin stuck out the side in the top of the ninth for the win.
Martin (3-1) up the win, tossing the two-hit, complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts. Sophomore Aaron Howell took the loss despite another solid outing. Howell (1-2) went 6.1 innings, scattering two unearned runs on four hits while striking out five batters.
Fairfield has a busy week ahead, traveling to St. John's on March 18 and taking on NJIT on March 19. The Stags will open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on March 22 at Iona.
