Baseball Takes Series at George Mason with Doubleheader Split

Baseball Topped By Delaware

 

BEL AIR, Md. – The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Delaware, 15-4, this afternoon. Junior Billy Zolga finished a triple short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 on the day.
 
Fairfield got on the board in the top of the first inning. Alex Witkus led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Ryan PlourdeDelaware took over the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run effort. The Stags tied it up in the top of the third inning as Jake Salpietro scored on a wild pitch.
 
Delaware broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth inning. Joe Giacchino led off with a homer and the Blue Hens went on to score five more runs in the inning for the 8-2 lead.
 
The Stags got one of the runs back in the top of the sixth inning on a solo homer by Zolga, his first of the season. The Blue Hens added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth and put up three more in the seventh. The Stags added their final run of the day on a solo homer by rookie Dan Hopkins, his second of the season.
 
Junior EJ Ashworth (1-2) took the loss, after allowing five run on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Mike Bonaiuto made his collegiate debut, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while picking up a strikeout. Brandon Hinkle (3-1) picked up the win, going 5.0 innings, scattering two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
 
Fairfield (3-7) and Delaware (8-8) close out the series tomorrow, March 16, at Harford Community College.
