Women's Lacrosse Tops New Hampshire, 10-8

DURHAM, N.H. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team topped the University of New Hampshire, 10-8, this afternoon at Cowell Stadium.

Melanie Raso, Courtney Chmil, Jenna Slowey, and Riley Hellstein scored two goals apiece for the Stags, who also received goals from Jamie Leone and Colleen Reynolds.

New Hampshire took an early lead when Laura Puccia netted the first goal of the game at 27:44. Fairfield answered with consecutive goals by Slowey and Chmil, at 22:35 and 18:00, to give the Stags a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back goals by the Wildcats' Laura McHoul and Puccia at 12:21 and 11:38 returned the lead to New Hampshire.

Hellstein tied the game at 3-3, after she scored off a free position shot at 8:03. Puccia answered with another goal, off a pass from McHoul, about four minutes later. At 1:40, Chmil netted her second goal of the game, off a pass from Julieanne MasceraWith only 47 seconds left in the first half, Kayleigh Hinkle scored for the Wildcats, giving New Hampshire a 5-4 lead into halftime.    

Fairfield came out strong in the second half, scoring the first two goals. The first was netted by Raso at 22:26 followed by Hellstein at 21:48. A fourth goal by Puccia tied the game at 6-6 at 19:21. The Stags took an 8-6 lead after goals by Raso and Reynolds, at 16:47 and 12:29, and never looked back.

New Hampshire tried to catch up with a goal by Brooke McGillis at 11:19, but a goal by Slowey, off a pass from Leone, kept Fairfield ahead. The final goal for the Wildcats came at 4:20, when McHoul narrowed the gap to 9-8. However, a final goal by Leone at 1:51 restored the Stags' two goal lead. New Hampshire was unable to score in the remaining minute and 51 seconds, sealing a 10-8 win for Fairfield.

Sophomore Chelsey Sidaras manned the net for the Stags, making six saves, while the Wildcats' Taylor Hurwitz tallied three.

For New Hampshire, Puccia tallied four goals and seven draw controls while McHoul scored two goals and added two assists. Hinkle added a goal and four draw controls for the Wildcats.  

Fairfield (4-2) continues action on the road, stopping at UConn on March 22 before stopping at Sacred Heart on March 26.
