Men's Basketball Falls At Buzzer To Saint Peter's

Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – For the second time this year, Desi Washington made a three-point field goal in the closing seconds to lift the Saint Peter's men's basketball team to a 63-62 decision over Fairfield University. The junior made the long-range jumper with two seconds remaining, six weeks after hitting a three pointer with one second remaining in a 56-55 win.

Fairfield held a four-point lead at 62-58 with 42 seconds remaining after Amadou Sidibe made both ends of a one-and-one situation. The forward would finish the game with a career-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. Quadir Welton pulled the Peacocks within two points following a layup with 29 seconds left. Fairfield had a chance to ice the game with a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left, but both tries fell off the rim to keep the score at 62-60.

Saint Peter's tried to set up a few chances inside but the Stags defense kept the Peacocks outside the three-point arc. Finally, Washington was forced to try a 22-footer with the shot clock winding down and the shot touched nothing but net to provide the winning margin.

The game started out well for the Stags as Sidibe tied his season-high for scoring in the first 20 minutes of play, scoring eight of the team's first 10 points en route to a 12-point first half. Saint Peter's scored the game's first basket on its first possession, but Justin Jenkins tied the game on Fairfield's first time with the ball. The Peacocks regained the lead with a free throw by Marvin Dominique, but Sidibe took over the game at that point.

The sophomore scored eight straight Fairfield points while Saint Peter's managed four points during Sidibe's run, pushing the Stags in front 10-7. Maurice Barrow converted a pair of free throws to improve Fairfield's advantage to 12-7, but the Peacocks responded with seven straight points to earn a 14-12 lead with 13 minutes remaining. Tyler Gaskins made a three-point shot to start the seven-point spurt.

The Stags would slowly rebuild their lead, using a 9-2 run that gave the team its biggest lead of the half at 21-16. Barrow netted four points while Jenkins added a three pointer during the Stags scoring streak. Fairfield would struggle from that point, going nearly six minutes without a point which allowed Saint Peter's to score eight consecutive points that made the score 24-21 in favor of the Peacocks. Marcus Gilbert tallied a pair of free throws to break the drought, but Saint Peter's would respond with five more points after those charity tosses, increasing the lead to 29-23.

The Peacocks would eventually settle for a nine-point halftime lead at 35-26. After Sidibe's 12 points, Barrow was the team's next leading scorer in the half with six points. Two Peacocks tallied seven points in the half, namely Dominique and Jamel Fields.

Saint Peter's managed to hold on to its nine-point edge through the first four minutes of the half with a 42-33 advantage with 16:06 remaining. Fairfield put together its best offensive threat of the game from that point, scoring 15 straight points to take a 48-42 lead as Rose and Coleman Johnson each had four points during that 10-point stretch.

A free throw by Quadir Welton broke the Saint Peter's drought, but the Stags continued to add to their lead over the next few minutes as they held a 54-45 advantage with 7:27 remaining in the game. The Stags maintained their nine-point lead at 60-51 with 3:26 remaining as Barrow scored three of the team's six points from the free throw line during that time.

Saint Peter's made the game-winning run by outscoring Fairfield by a 12-2 margin over the last 3:26 of the game.

Washington finished the game with 16 points, while Fields and Dominique each added 12 points for the Peacocks. Barrow netted 15 points for the Stags before he fouled out with less than three minutes remaining.

Fairfield will finish the regular season on Friday when it hosts Marist College at Webster Bank Arena. The game is scheduled for a 7 pm tip. The Stags will honor senior Maurice Barrow before the game with the senior ceremony slated for 6:45 pm.
