Women's Lacrosse Falls to Rutgers, 6-5

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team fell to Rutgers, 6-5, this afternoon at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.

Senior captain Melanie Raso scored twice for the Stags, who also received goals from Courtney Chmil, Jamie Leone, and Maeve Quinn

The game remained scoreless for most of the first half until Chmil put the Stags on the board at 13:11. Fairfield pushed the lead to 2-0 when Raso netted a goal off a pass from Quinn, at 5:21. Almost two minutes later, the Scarlet Knights tallied their first goal when Halley Barnes scored off a free position shot.  In the remaining three and half minutes, Chmil and Raso took shots on goal but saves from Rutgers' goalkeeper, Amanda Currell, kept the ball out of the net. The Stags had a 2-1 advantage into halftime.

Action picked up in the second half when the Scarlet Knights tied the game at 2-2, off a goal from Megan Clements, about three minutes in. Rutgers then took the lead only 51 seconds later when Kim Kolodny netted a goal off a pass from Clements.

The Scarlet Knights extended their lead to 5-2 with back-to-back goals at 23:12 and 22:35. Both goals were scored off of free position shots, the first by Melissa Arthur and the second by Katrina Martinelli. The Stags answered at 19:03, when a goal by Quinn shortened the gap to 5-3. About seven minutes later, Kolodny scored her second goal of the game, restoring the Scarlet Knights' three goal lead.

Fairfield battled back, scoring a set of consecutive goals at 6:45 and 2:18. The first goal was scored by Raso while the second was netted by Leone, bringing the game to 6-5. In the remaining two minutes of regulation, the Stags were unable to get off a shot, yielding a 6-5 victory for Rutgers.

Sophomore Chelsey Sidaras manned the net for the Stags, making eight saves, while the Scarlet Knights' Currell tallied 10.

Despite Rutgers having a slight 20-18 advantage in shots, the Stags had an 11-10 advantage in ground balls. Colleen Reynolds, Chmil, and Sidaras tallied two ground balls apiece. Throughout the entire game, the Stags caused six turnovers while the Scarlet Knights only caused three.

For Rutgers, Kolodny tallied two goals and one ground ball. Clements tallied one goal and one assist for the Scarlet Knights, while Chrissy Schreiber was credited with an assist.
