Maurice Barrow scored a team-high 22 points while KJ Rose added a personal-best 18 points as the Fairfield University men's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac University, 80-72.
The Bobcats trailed only once in the game when Maurice Gilbert made one of two free throws at the 18:57 mark of the first half that gave Fairfield a 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac scored the next 16 points to take command of the game at 16-1 with 13:15 remaining in the half. Ousame Drame and Zaid Hearst each scored six points during that run.
Fairfield broke the run on a layup from Rose which started an 11-3 run by the Stags that would pull the team within seven points at 19-12 with 10 minutes remaining in the half. The Bobcats regained their 15-point lead later in the half at 29-14, but once again Fairfield stormed back with nine straight points to come with six points, 29-23.
Doug Chappell netted back-to-back three pointers and Rose added a three-point play to comprise the run.
The Stags cut the lead to four points at 30-26 before Quinnipiac used a 9-2 run at the end of the half to gain a double-figure lead at halftime, 39-28.
Quinnipiac would keep its double-figure lead for most of the second half until Fairfield made one more run late in the game. Trailing by 14 points at 55-41, Fairfield put together a 15-5 spurt that brought the team within four points at 60-56 at the 6:58 mark. The Bobcats netted seven straight points to regain an 11-point lead and never led by less than eight points the rest of the way.
All five Quinnipiac starters accounted for the team's points as the bench went scoreless in the game. Hearst also tallied 20 points for the visitors, 13 of which came from the free throw line.
Fairfield gets back to action on Saturday when it hosts Rider University on Saturday at Webster Bank Arena. Game time is slated for 4 pm.
