Stags Can?t Hold On In Loss To Marshall

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. – Kristin Schatzlein tallied a career-high 21 points and Lizzy Ball dished out a personal-best six assist but it was not enough as the Marshall Thundering Herd used a strong run at the end of the game to top the Stags 68-55 in the final game of the URI Tipoff tournament.

"It was a hard fought tight game with many lead changes," Head Coach Joe Frager said.  "Again, we saw some positives from our young team today.  We cut down on our turnovers and we battled throughout.  Marshall made some important shots down the stretch and controlled the boards."

Fairfield (0-2) had the game tied with 9:14 left to play in the second half with the score knotted at 49-49, but Marshall (2-0) used a 13-4 run over the next six minutes of play to put the game out of reach.

For the second straight game, the Stags got off to a fast start scoring 35 points in the first half and connecting on nearly 44 percent of their shots.  Getting only her second career start, Ball dished out five assists in the first 20 minutes on her birthday, with only one turnover and even recorded her second career block.

"We did get off to a positive start and we responded when they took the lead," Coach Frager said.  "As we have fatigued, we've struggled on the boards and with some mental mistakes.  I like this group a lot.  We have to tighten some things up and bounce back.  We faced very good opposition in this tournament and we have a great deal of basketball ahead of us."

Casey Smith also had a productive opening frame shooting 50 percent from the floor with eight points and five rebounds.  Margeaux Dupuy contributed seven points in her nine minutes of work in the first.

Fairfield's largest lead was four after a Dupuy four point play with 3:45 left in the first half made the score 29-25.  However, the Stags would go into the locker room in a 35-35 tie.

Marshall shot 38 percent in the second half and got to the line 17 times to take control of the final score.  Leah Scott and Norrisha Victrum both tallied eight points in the final half while Chukwuka Ezeigbo had nine rebounds to lead all players.

Schatzlein led all players with 11 points with three three-point field goals in the half.

Fairfield will look for their first win of the year in their first true road contest when they travel to Hofstra on Tuesday with tip-off at 7pm.
