FAIRFIELD, Conn.
- The Fairfield University field hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat La Salle University, 5-3, this afternoon at University Field. Sophomore Emily McCauley and freshman Ann Burgoyne scored two goals apiece.

Scoring was off to an early start when La Salle's Olivia Shoemaker tallied the first goal of the game just three minutes into the first half. The Stags quickly answered when McCauley shot from the left side of the circle to tie the game, 1-1, at 5:40. Play continued until a goal by Felicitas Heinen off a penalty corner gave Fairfield a 2-1 lead into halftime. Shealyn Testa and Emily Leo assisted on the goal.

About five minutes into the second half, the Explorers tied the game, 2-2, on a goal by Maddy Tettelbach. Not long after, Shoemaker scored her second goal of the game off a penalty corner, giving La Salle a 3-2 lead at 48:16.

The Stags battled back netting two goals in a little over one minute to take control of the game. McCauley scored her second goal of the day off a pass from Burgoyne at 55:55. Then at 56:57, Burgoyne scored off a break away, providing Fairfield with a 4-3 lead. Burgoyne struck again with about eight minutes left to play to make the score 5-3. The Stags shut down La Salle the rest of the way for the victory.

Goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett tallied five saves on the day, while La Salle's Lisa Shaffer had six. Fairfield out-shot La Salle, 17-11, with five shots coming from Testa.

Fairfield (4-2) will play their next two games on the road, stopping at Sacred Heart University on September 20 at 7pm and Siena College on September 22 at 2pm.
