BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to Colgate University 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19) this afternoon in the opening match of the LIU Brooklyn Blackbird Invitational. Junior Marilyn Peizer posted a match-high 13 kills for the Stags.

Senior Rachel Romansky notched her fifth double-double of the year, finishing with 36 assists and 11 digs along with a season-high five kills.

Defensively, sophomore Hadley Orr had a career-high 22 digs along with seven kills and two blocks. Red-shirt senior Carsen Mata posted 23 digs, bringing her career total to 700, and nine assists while freshman Bella Guanciale added 11 digs.

Senior Hayley Moyer tallied nine kills and three total blocks while junior Camille Coffey chipped in with 14 digs and six kills, both season highs.

The Raiders (5-2) and the Stags (2-6) played a close first set with 12 ties and seven lead changes. With the score knotted at 21-21, Fairfield committed back-to-back attack errors to give Colgate a two-point advantage. After a timeout by the Stags, the Raiders' Kaylee Fifer made it a three-point lead with a kill. Peizer held off set point with a kill of her own but Colgate's Lindsay Young put down the game-winning kill.

Fairfield used an early 6-2 run in the second set to pull away from Colgate. The Stags, behind .349 hitting, never looked back as they cruised to a 25-16 win.

The third set was another back-and-forth battle with 10 ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 19-19, the Raiders rattled off five unanswered points to jump ahead 24-19. The Stags held off set point twice on a kill by Romansky and a Colgate attack error but the Raiders eked out the 25-22 win.

In the fourth set, Colgate opened up an early five-point lead which it maintained most of the way. Fairfield cut it to 20-19 on a kill by Romansky but Colgate closed match on a 5-0 run.

Fairfield posted 92 digs on the day with 50 kills. Colgate had 54 kills and 88 digs and out-blocked the Stags, 11-8.

Fairfield returns to action at the Blackbird Invitational tomorrow, September 14, facing Cornell at 12:30pm followed by host LIU Brooklyn at 6:30pm.
