Baseball Heads To Manhattan This Weekend

The Stags (15-27; 7-11 MAAC) play its final two MAAC series on the road beginning with Manhattan, May 11-12, in Riverdale, N.Y. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a single game. First pitch on both days is slated for noon.

On the Web: Manhattan will be providing LiveStats on GoJaspers.com.

Fairfield vs. Manhattan: The Jaspers and the Stags met four times last season, three times in the regular season and once in the MAAC Tournament. Fairfield won just one of those contests, an impressive 6-3 come-from-behind victory on May 5 at Alumni Diamond. In the MAAC Tournament, the Jaspers edged the Stags, 1-0, to eliminate them from competition. Manhattan earned a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning for the game's only run. Manhattan has taken eight of the last nine meetings from the Stags but Fairfield is 66-42 all-time against the Jaspers.

A Look At Manhattan (21-25; 8-10 MAAC): The Jaspers return to MAAC play for the first time since April 28 when they closed out the series at Saint Peter's with a 3-2 loss. Manhattan had previously swept the doubleheader from Peacocks. Last weekend, the Jaspers took two out of three games from Lafayette but are coming off an 8-0 loss to the Leopards. Ramon Ortega is batting .329 with 33 RBI and 26 runs scored while Nick Camastro is hitting .288 with 27 runs scored and 14 stolen bases. As a pitching staff, the Jaspers have a collective 5.33 ERA. Scott McClennan (3-2) has a 3.49 ERA with two complete games and two shutouts this season. John Soldinger (4-3) has a 3.72 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 77.1 innings and has thrown three complete games.

Last Time Out: Rookie Aaron Howell struck out seven in his first collegiate shutout while senior Anthony Hajjar drove in three runs to power the Stags to a 4-0 victory over Iona College to complete a three-game sweep of the Gaels on May 5. Howell (2-2) threw 8.1 innings of shutout baseball, scattering just five hits and two walks while setting a career high with seven strikeouts. Howell threw 100 pitches, 65 of which were strikes, and did not allow an Iona runner beyond second base until the seventh inning. It was only fitting that on Senior Day at Alumni Diamond that Hajjar would provide much of the Stags offense, going 2-for-3 with a homer.

Fairfield among the MAAC Leaders: As a team, Fairfield leads the league in pick-offs (13), is third in double plays (40), third in sacrifice hits (40), fourth in stolen bases (68), fourth in batting average (.261), and fifth in ERA (5.07). Individually, outfielder Ryan Plourde is third in batting average (.365), fifth in slugging percentage (.520), second in on-base percentage (.473), tied for fifth in hits (54), tied for third in stolen bases (14), and tied for second in triples (4) and walks (28). First baseman Anthony Hajjar is tied for second in the league in doubles (13) and tied for first in double plays turned (38). Sal Ciccone and Mike Bennett are tied for second and fourth, respectively, in sacrifice hits.

Moving On Up: Senior Anthony Hajjar is poised to move up the Stags career charts in numerous categories. The first baseman has 220 hits which ranks third all-time. Just ahead of Hajjar on the list are former Stags Ryan Bittner (228) and Tucker Nathans (263). With 40 doubles, Hajjar is tied for fifth all-time. Just ahead of Hajjar is former Stag Peter Allen (42). At 185 games played and 184 starts, Hajjar is tied for third all-time. Former Stag Ryan Bittner started all 187 games he played while Tucker Nathans is the career leader with 190 starts and 193 games played. Hajjar fourth all-time in RBI (127), tenth in runs scored (116), fifth in total bases (301), and second in at-bats (700).

Looking Ahead: Fairfield will be on the road for the remainder of the season. After a non-league game at Quinnipiac on May 14, Fairfield finishes out the year at Canisius, May 16-17.
