Baseball Routs Iona in Doubleheader Sweep

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team notched the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader sweep of on Iona College by routing the Gaels this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Stags picked up a 16-3 victory in the opener followed by a 17-3 win in the second game.
 
Seniors Anthony Hajjar and Jack Giannini both swung hot bats for the Stags. Hajjar went a combined 6-for-11 with five runs scored and six batted in while Giannini went a combined 6-for-10 with four RBI and four runs scored.
 
In the opener, the Stags pounded out a season-high 20 hits while rookie Mike Wallace quieted the Iona bats. Wallace (5-3) went seven innings, 6.2 of which were shutout frames, scattering two runs on seven hits while striking out four batters in the victory. Sophomore Ian Tresser pitched the final two innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits.
 
Fairfield (14-27; 6-11 MAAC) opened a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of the first game and broke it open with a four-run third inning. The Stags added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 9-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Gaels broke up the shutout by taking advantage of a Fairfield error. The Stags got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a solo homer by rookie Jake Salpietro. Iona added another run in the top of the seventh, but in the bottom half of the inning, Salpietro hit his second homer of the game, this time a two-run shot to leftfield to make the score 12-2. Fairfield tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth while Iona scored one run in the top of the ninth.
 
Hajjar was 4-for-6 in the opener with three RBI and two runs scored while Giannini was 3-for-6 with three runs scored. Salpietro was 3-for-4 with two homers, three RBI, and three runs scored. Rookie Keith Skinner and sophomore Sal Ciccone chipped in with three hits apiece.
 
In the second game of the day, the Stags jumped out to a 7-0 lead by scoring three times in the first inning and four times in the second inning. Fairfield added three runs in the bottom of the fourth then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, including a two-run homer by Ryan Plourde which banged off the scoreboard in leftfield.
 
Sophomore starter EJ Ashworth handled the Iona offense, holding the Gaels scoreless until the fourth inning when Joe Smith hit a solo homer. Ashworth then retired eight of the final nine batters he faced. Ashworth (2-4) had an impressive line, going 6.0 innings and scattering one run on five hits with three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
 
Fairfield had 13 hits in game two and four Stags had multi-hit games. Rob LoPinto went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Giannini was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Plourde went 2-for-3 three with a walk, three RBI, three runs scored. Hajjar was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three driven in.
 
Fairfield plays its final home game of the season tomorrow, May 5, when it closes the series with Iona. Prior to the 12pm first pitch, the Stags will honor their senior class.
