Baseball Hosts Iona For Final Home Series


Fairfield will play its final home series this weekend by hosting Iona College at Alumni Diamond. The two teams will play at doubleheader beginning at 12pm on May 4 followed by the series finale at 12pm on May 5. Prior to the first pitch on Sunday, the Stags will honor their seniors Mike Bennett, Kyle Capaldo, Jack Giannini, and Anthony Hajjar.

Fairfield vs. Iona: Last season, Iona opened MAAC play by taking two out of three from Fairfield. The Gaels edged the Stags, 5-2, in the opener. The two teams split the doubleheader the following day, with the Stags pounding the Gaels in the first game, 9-3, and Iona downing Fairfield, 8-5, in the nightcap. Anthony Hajjar went 5-for-12 with five RBI against Iona last season. In nine career games against the Gaels, Anthony Hajjar is batting .385 with 18 RBI. In six career games, Ryan Plourde is batting .300 with six runs scored against Iona. The all-time series between the two programs is even at 61-61-1.

A Look at the Gaels (7-35; 2-13 MAAC): Iona snapped a three-game losing streak on May 1 by edging St. John's, 7-6, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Gaels used a rally in the seventh inning to overtake the Red Storm live on ESPN3. Joe Torres is batting .277 with a team-high 24 runs scored while Jimmy Guiliano is batting .261 with a team-high 15 RBI. As a pitching staff, the Gaels have a combined ERA of 6.50 while opponents sport a 2.25 ERA. 

Last Time Out: Stony Brook's Cole Peragine hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Seawolves to a 4-2victory over the Stags on Wednesday at Joe Nathan Field. Senior Jack Giannini went 3-for-4 on the day for the Stags. In his longest outing of his career, sophomore Tucker Panciera went 8.0 innings, scattering four runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

 Looking Ahead: Fairfield plays its final seven games on the road with a three-game series at Manhattan, May 11-12, a game at Quinnipiac on May 14, and the season finale at Canisius, May 16-17.
