BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University baseball team ended its 2013 season with a tough 5-0 loss at Canisius College this afternoon. The Stags, who won eight of its last 10 games, finish the year at 20-29 overall and 11-13 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
In his final game as a Stag, senior
Anthony Hajjar went 1-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. Hajjar appeared in his 192nd career game and made his program record-setting 191st start for the Stags. The first baseman leaves Fairfield standing third all-time in hits (227), fifth in doubles (42), fourth in RBI (133), fifth in total bases (310), tied for eighth in runs scored (121), and second in at-bats (725). Defensively, he is tied for first all-time in fielding percentage (.990), and is second in chances (1676) and putouts (1526).
Freshman starter
Mike Wallace and Canisius starter Devon Stewart (4-5) battled it out on the mound in a pitchers' duel for the first seven innings. Stewart went 7.0 shutout innings, holding the Stags to four hits and two walks while fanning six batters. Wallace (6-4) went 7.0 innings, scattering three runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts.
Canisius (39-15; 15-9 MAAC) got on the board first as Anthony Massicci led off the third inning with a single and came around to score on a two-out single by Ryan Coppinger. Wallace responded by retiring the next seven batters he faced.
The Stags threatened in the top of the sixth inning. Hajjar and
Jake Salpietro both singled with two outs but Stewart was able to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the sixth, Christian Segar led off with a single and later scored on a two-out single by Brooklyn Foster to extend the lead to 2-0. The Griffs added another run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Segar for the 3-0 advantage.
Canisius added two more runs in the eighth inning off while the Griffs' Jon Fitzsimmons closed out the game by tossing 2.0 shutout innings for his tenth save of the year.
Senior
Jack Giannini (Bronx, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 in his final game of the Stag.
