Baseball Closes Out Season at Canisius on Thursday


Fairfield, winners of six of its last seven games, will play its final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series of the year at Canisius College, May 16-17. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday followed by the season finale on Friday. First pitch on both days is slated for 12pm.

Fairfield (18-28; 9-12 MAAC) vs. Canisius (38-13; 14-7 MAAC): The Stags and the Griffs will meet for the first time since their MAAC Tournament match-up last season. The two teams split all four meetings last season. After enduring a 5-2 loss in the opener, the Stags posted a 4-0 win behind a four-hit, nine-strikeout, complete game effort by Scott Warwick. In the series finale, the Stags posted a 7-3 victory. Canisius took the final meeting of the year by edging Fairfield, 2-1, in the first round of the MAAC Tournament. In nine career games, Anthony Hajjar is batting .323 (10-for-31) with five runs and five RBI against Canisius. Fairfield is 24-22 all-time against Canisius, yet the Griffs have taken 14 of the last 19 meetings.

A Look at the Griffs: Canisius has won four-straight games and six of its last seven entering Thursday's contest. After sweeping Niagara last weekend to earn a MAAC Tournament berth, the Griffs edged Youngstown State, 5-3, in Ohio on Tuesday. Five Griffs are batting over .300 this season with Jimmy Luppens leading the way with a .374 average and 44 RBI. Jesse Kelso is next with a .331 batting average, 31 walks, 43 runs scored, and 34 driven in. As a pitching staff, Canisius has a collective 3.84 ERA with 320 strikeouts. Garrett Cortright is 10-2 for the Griffs with a 1.98 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 95.2 innings of work this season. Rookie Alex Godzak has a 2.07 ERA with and 59 strikeouts in 69.2 innings. Reliever Jon Fitzsimmons has a microscopic 0.35 ERA this season with nine saves.

Moving on Up: Entering his final series as a Stag, senior Anthony Hajjar can still move up the Stags career charts. The first baseman has 225 hits which ranks third all-time. Just ahead of Hajjar on the list is former Stag Ryan Bittner (228).With 42 doubles, Hajjar is tied with former Stag Peter Allen for fourth all-time. At 189 games played, Hajjar is second all-time and four games behind career leader Tucker Nathans (193). With 188 starts, Hajjar is second all-time and two starts behind Nathans (190). Hajjar fourth all-time in RBI (131), ninth in runs scored (120), fifth in total bases (308), and second in at-bats (714). Defensively, Hajjar is currently tied for first all-time in fielding percentage (.990) and is second all-time in chances (1656) and putouts (1506)

Checking In: Junior Ryan Plourde cracked the top-10 on Fairfield's career walks chart (82) and is six hits away from the top-10 in that category. Plourde has checked into Fairfield's top-10 single season charts in walks (31), triples (4), on-base percentage (.463). He is approaching the top-10 in hits (57).
