Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. –
The Fairfield University baseball team won its third straight game by topping Quinnipiac University, 6-2, this afternoon in the Stags' final non-league game of the season.

Sophomore Tucker Panciera went 6.0 innings, scattering two runs, one earned, on two hits and five walks as he improved to 3-3 on the year.

Sophomore Alex Witkus led the game off by beating out a groundball hit to the shortstop. After stealing second, Witkus advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt with one out. Witkus then trotted home on a wild pitch to give Fairfield the 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac starter Kevin Sustad issued three consecutive walks to load the bases. After a wild pitch allowed Ryan Plourde to score, senior Jack Giannini singled to center to drive in Anthony Hajjar and make the score 3-0. Sustad was able to get an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

Quinnipiac (14-35) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Vincent Guglietti singled up the middle to drive in a run and pull the Bobcats within 3-1. That's all that the Bobcats would get as Panciera retired the next two batters to get out of the inning. A Fairfield error in the bottom of the sixth inning led to Quinnipiac's second run of the day.

In the top of the eighth, Witkus bunted for a base hit to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Hajjar doubled to leftfield to drive in Witkus. Hajjar then scored on a single by Dean Sadik to extend Fairfield's lead to 5-2. Senior Mike Bennett drove in the Stags' sixth run of the day with a single to left center.

Sophomore Anthony DiMauro threw two perfect innings of relief, retiring all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings and striking out two batters. Rookie Tim Duggan closed out the ninth inning.

Witkus went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs scored.

Fairfield (18-28; 9-12 MAAC) closes out the 2013 season with a three-game series at Canisius College, May 16-17.
