PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Another year, another medal for the Fairfield University women's novice 4 as this year's crew captured the gold medal at the 2013 Dad Vail Regatta. The Stags' women's novice 4 boat won a gold medal in 2010, a bronze medal in 2011, and a silver medal in 2012, making this the fourth medal for this crew at the Dad Vail.
This year, Liz Franger, Maura Flanagan, Marla Levano, Jeannette Eckelman, and coxswain Nicole Karwashan combined for the gold medal by navigating the final with a time of 7:35.838. The Stags beat crews from George Mason, Villanova, Florida State, Lehigh and Purdue. Fairfield advanced to the final by winning its semifinal race in 7:21.83, nearly 15 seconds better than runner-up Lehigh.
Five other Fairfield boats raced this morning in a semifinal race, starting with the men's novice 4.
Chris Calitri, Bobby Lawler, Charles Serpa, Kier Kaiser, and coxswain
Olivia Vita took third place in that race with a time of 6:56.154. Michigan won the race by crossing the finish line in 6:48.30.
The women's novice 8, comprised of Rachel Corbett, Casey Bowler, Amanda Murphy, Taylor Rooney, Megan DiBello, Jacquie Moser, Danielle Lug, Katelyn Mazzucco, and coxswain Nicole Antonucci, completed the course in 7:50.990 which was good enough for sixth place. Western Ontario captured the semifinal with a time of 7:03.34.
The Stags also entered a men's and a women's pair in the regatta, and both qualified for today's semifinals. The women's duo, which consisted of Genevieve Bleidner and Kim Beatty, secured fifth place in today's event by running the course in 8:42,23. Penn State posted the win in the race. The men's pair crossed the line sixth with a time of 8:32.69 as Rochester won the semifinal.
The women's novice 4 also went back to the water after their second place finish in Friday's heat. The crew posted a time of 8:03.10 for fourth place behind Bucknell's winning time of 7:45.99. The Stags entry included Katherine Pitz, Carmen Fox, Molly Graffam, Sam Matte, and coxswain Mikayla Daniels.
