Fairfield (9-17) vs. Yale (6-18): Last season, the Stags handed Head Coach
Bill Currier his 500th career victory with their first-ever doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs. Fairfield picked up a 4-3 win in opener and pulled out an 8-4 victory in the night cap.
Anthony Hajjar went a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI while
Sebastian Salvo was a combined 3-for-6. Fairfield has taken four of the last five meetings from Yale with the Bulldogs' lone win coming on April 14, 2010. Fairfield is 17-25 all-time against Yale.
A Look at the Bulldogs: Yale is coming off a doubleheader split at Penn on April 7. After dropping the first game, pitcher David Hickey tossed a four-hit complete game shutout, striking out 11 batters to power the Bulldogs to a 1-0 win. Offensively this season, Green Campbell is batting a .391 with 10 RBI and 11 runs scored. David Toups has driven in 12 runs while Brett Lawson has crossed the plate 12 times.
MAAC Player of the Week: Sophomore
Sal Ciccone was named the MAAC Player of the Week on April 8. The shortstop batted .643 (9-for-14), including three multi-hit games, with six runs scored and three RBI. Ciccone slugged .786 and had an on-base percentage of .667. Defensively, Ciccone helped turn four double plays and had just one error in 23 chances. Ciccone began the week by going 3-for-4 with a run scored at NJIT. In the Stags' 7-1 victory in the series opener against Saint Peter's University, Ciccone accounted for three of Fairfield's runs, finishing the game 3-for-3 with a sacrifice, two RBI, and a run scored. In the second game, Ciccone was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
Still Going: With a hit in his final at-bat against Saint Peter's on April 7, junior
Ryan Plourde extended his hitting streak to 18 games which ties the longest streak in program history. The feat was also accomplished by Ryan Bittner in 2000 and Mike Svab in 1990. Plourde has reached base in all 26 games this season as well, joining a club of 20 others players nationally.
Stags Among the MAAC Leaders: As a team, Fairfield is fourth in the MAAC in batting (.264) and fourth in ERA (5.23). The Stags also lead the league in fielding percentage (.968). Individually,
Anthony Hajjar is tied for the league lead in doubles (10) while
Jack Giannini is fifth in hits (35).
National Notice: As a team, Fairfield is ranked 16th in the nation in doubles per game (1.12) and 43rd in double plays (29). Individually, Hajjar is 36th in doubles per game (0.4) and the 30th toughest batter to strikeout, fanning once every 15.8 at-bats. Hajjar has struck out just six times in 95 at-bats this season.
Looking Ahead: Fairfield takes MAAC play on the road this weekend, stopping at Marist College for a three-game series. The Stags continue road play next week with a stop at UConn on April 16. Fairfield returns home to host Northeastern on April 17.
