Fairfield vs. Niagara: The Stags have taken six straight meetings from the Purple Eagles and eight of the last nine over the last three seasons. Fairfield is 30-14 all-time against Niagara. During last year's series, Fairfield rolled over Niagara, 13-1, to complete the three-game sweep in Western New York. The Stags took both games of the doubleheader by scores of 3-1 and 4-2 before unleashing their offense in the finale the following day. Niagara's last victory over Fairfield came on April 25, 2010 when the Purple Eagles notched a 13-5 victory in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
A Look at the Purple Eagles (13-27; 7-8 MAAC): Niagara was last in action on Tuesday when it topped Buffalo, 9-3. The win snapped a five-game slide which included three losses to Siena last weekend. Redshirt senior Ryan McCauley is batting .300 with a team-high 27 runs scored and 23 walks. Rookie Greg Rodgers leads the team in RBI with 25. As a pitching staff, Niagara is yielding 7.76 runs per game. Rookie Kyle Olver (3-6) has a 5.54 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 66.2 innings of work this season.
Last Time Out: The Stags snapped a six-game skid by topping Central Connecticut State University, 12-4, on April 24. Fairfield pounded out 12 hits with four Stags recording multi-hit games, including rookie Keith Skinner who went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Freshman
Jake Salpietro extended his hitting streak to 11 games, hit his first collegiate homerun, and finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Ryan Plourde went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, a sacrifice fly, two runs scored, and two driven in. Sophomore
Alex Witkus went 2-for-3, was plunked twice, drew a walk, stole a base, scored two runs, and had one RBI. Sophomore
Tucker Panciera (2-2) scattered four runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out two batters to earn his second victory of the year.
Looking Ahead: The Stags and the Purple Eagles conclude the series tomorrow with a single game at 12pm. Fairfield then faces two tough non-league opponents next week on the road, stopping at St. John's University on April 30 followed by Stony Brook University on May 1. The Stags will play their final home series of the year, May 4-5, when they host Iona College. Fairfield will honor its senior class prior to the May 5 contest.
