FAIRFIELD, Conn.  – The Sacred Heart University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth to overtake Fairfield University, 7-5, this afternoon in non-league action at Alumni Diamond.
 
Junior Ryan Plourde went 2-for-3 with two walks and two stolen bases while sophomore Alex Witkus went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, a run scored and one driven in for Fairfield.
 
Fairfield (10-23) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Witkus led off with single and moved around to third after stealing second and later third. With one out, Witkus scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Hajjar.
 
After leaving the bases loaded in the third inning, Fairfield pushed a run across the plate in the fourth inning on a single by Witkus to make it 2-0. The Stags added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Brendan Tracy scored on an error.
 
Sacred Heart (19-17) broke up the shutout with two outs in the top of the seventh. Dan Perez scored on an error to make it 3-1 while Derick Horn scored on an infield single by Brian Castles to make it a one-run game. Fairfield got both of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Jack Giannini drove in a pair of Stags with a single.
 
The Pioneers pulled within 5-3 in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI double by Matt Charmello. Sacred Heart rallied in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs to overtake the Stags, 7-5. The Pioneers retired the Stags in order in the bottom of the ninth to walk away with the win.
 
Billy McDonough (1-0) picked up the win throwing 2.0 scoreless and hitless inning while Kyle Capaldo (2-4) took the loss after being charged with all four runs in the ninth. Freshman Aaron Howell received the no-decision for the Stags, going 6.2 innings and scattering two unearned runs on four this with four strikeouts in his sixth start of the season.
 
Fairfield returns to action tomorrow, April 24, when it heads to Central Connecticut State University for a 3:30pm start. The Stags resume MAAC action, April 27-28, when they host Niagara University.
