Baseball Heads To Marist This Weekend


Fairfield resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend with a three-game series at Marist College. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 13 beginning at 12pm followed by the series finale on Sunday at 12pm.

Fairfield (10-17; 3-6 MAAC) vs. Marist (15-12-1; 6-3 MAAC): In the final MAAC series of the 2012 season, the Stags took two out of three one-run games from the Red Foxes to secure the third seed in the MAAC Championship. Fairfield opened that series with a 1-0 victory. The following day the two teams split a doubleheader with Marist taking the first, 4-3, while the Stags picked up a 3-2 win in 10 innings. Senior Anthony Hajjar is a career .378 hitter against Marist with six runs scored and seven RBI in nine games. The Stags have taken three of the last five meetings from the Red Foxes, but Marist holds a 35-11 advantage in the series.

A Look at the Red Foxes: Marist was last in action against Albany on April 9. After dropping the first contest, 5-4, the Red Foxes' second game was called due to darkness and resulted in a 6-6 tie. Prior to that, Marist dropped to out of the three against Manhattan. Zach Shank is batting .374 with 20 RBI and 27 runs scored for the Red Foxes while Mike Orefice is hitting .350 with 24 walks, 32 RBI, and 20 runs scored. Orefice is also errorless this season at first base. On the hill, Chris Bielak (3-1) has a 3.07 ERA with 35 strikeouts while Brett Houseal (5-3) has a 3.79 ERA with 35 strikeouts.

Last Time Out:  Junior Rob LoPinto hit a two-run homer to lift the Stags to a 3-2 victory over Yale University on Wednesday afternoon. LoPinto finished the day 2-for-2 with two walks. Freshman Aaron Howell (1-1) picked up the win for the Stags, going 4.0 innings and scattering two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Keep It Close: Eleven of the Stags' 27 games have been decided by two runs or less. Fairfield is 5-6 in those contests.

Streaking Stag: Junior Ryan Plourde had his 18-game hitting streak snapped against Yale on April 10. Plourde did draw a walk against the Bulldogs to extend his reached base streak to 27 games.

MAAC Player of the Week: Sophomore Sal Ciccone was named the MAAC Player of the Week on April 8. The shortstop batted .643 (9-for-14), including three multi-hit games, with six runs scored and three RBI. Ciccone slugged .786 and had an on-base percentage of .667. Defensively, Ciccone helped turn four double plays and had just one error in 23 chances. Ciccone began the week by going 3-for-4 with a run scored at NJIT. In the Stags' 7-1 victory in the series opener against Saint Peter's University, Ciccone accounted for three of Fairfield's runs, finishing the game 3-for-3 with a sacrifice, two RBI, and a run scored. In the second game, Ciccone was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.

Looking Ahead: The Stags continue road play next week with a stop at UConn on April 16. Fairfield returns home to host Northeastern on April 17.
