Box Score - Game One
Box Score - Game Two

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J.  –
The Fairfield University baseball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Rider University this afternoon. The Broncs nipped the Stags, 3-2, in the opener but Fairfield came away with the 5-2 win in the series finale.

Senior Anthony Hajjar went a combined 4-for-5 on the day with three walks, three runs scored, and an RBI. Hajjar brought his career hit total to 198 surpassing former Stag Tom Lopusznick for fourth all-time at Fairfield.

In the first game of the day, Rider (13-10; 2-1 MAAC) struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. It was the only blemish on EJ Ashworth's outing as he held the Broncs to just three hits the rest of the way. Fairfield (8-14; 2-4 MAAC) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning after Hajjar drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Ryan Plourde.

The Stags pulled within 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning as senior Jack Giannini led off with a single and scored on a double by Hajjar. The Broncs' Zach Mawson was able to hold off the Stags in the seventh to save it for Rider. Ashworth (1-2) got the loss after scattering three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings while Kurt Sowa (5-1) posted the win after allowing two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings.

In the nightcap, Sophomore Jeremy Soule notched his first win of the season with a solid outing. The right hander scattered two runs, one earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts in eight innings.

Rider took an early 1-0 lead and both teams would go scoreless until the sixth inning. That's when Fairfield broke up the shutout, exploding for five runs. Hajjar got things started with a leadoff walk. After stealing second, he scored on a double by Plourde. With two on and one out, rookie Jake Salpietro came through with a single to centerfield to put the Stags ahead, 2-1. A Broncs error on a ball off the bat of sophomore Sal Ciccone led to the third run of the inning while Salpietro scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1. Ciccone later stole home to make it a four-run game.

After allowing two hits in the fourth inning, Soule mowed down 10 of the next 11 batters he faced. Rider finally got a hit with one out in the eighth inning as Eric Strano singled. Strano would later score on an error by the Stags to make the score 5-2. That's as close as Rider would get as Anthony DiMauro posted his third save of the year by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Fairfield is back in action on April 3 when the Stags travel to NJIT for a 4pm start.
