LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Rider University, 13-1, this afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Sonny Pittaro Field.
Rider took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a one-out RBI single by Ian Lindsay. Fairfield tied it up in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior
Ryan Plourde which plated
Jack Giannini.
The Broncs regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, on an RBI single by Justin Thomas. Rider tacked on seven additional runs in the inning for the 9-1 advantage. The Broncs added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend the lead to 13-1.
Tyler Smith (4-2) notched the win after scattering one run on three hits with five strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Freshman
Mike Wallace (2-2) went 6.2 innings, striking out seven batters but was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits.
Fairfield (7-13; 1-3 MAAC) and Rider (12-9; 1-0 MAAC) close out the series tomorrow, March 30, with a doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
