Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.  –
The Fairfield University baseball team dropped the rubber game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series, falling to Siena College, 9-3, this afternoon at Alumni Diamond.

Senior Jack Giannini and sophomore Billy Zolga each went 3-for-4 on the day. With his effort at the plate, Giannini extended his on-base streak to 31 games.

Fairfield (6-11; 1-2 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Giannini led off with a double and later scored on a double by Zolga. Sophomore hurler Jeremy Soule, meanwhile, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The Saints' first hit of the day came on a two-out single by Nick Wolyniec who was stranded at first base.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Stags added another run for the 2-0 advantage. This time rookie Jake Salpietro led off with a double and later scored on a single by freshman Keith Skinner.

Soule's shutout would be broken up in the sixth after a two-out error by the Stags lead to a big inning for the Saints. After the error, Siena managed to load the bases. John Rooney cleared them with double to deep centerfield to put the Saints on top 3-2. Rooney then scored on a single by Brian Fay to make it 4-2.

The Stags loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but were unable to capitalize. Fairfield pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Ryan Plourde, who extended his hitting streak to nine games. Siena (6-14; 2-1 MAAC), however, broke the game open in the top of the ninth, pushing five runs across the plate.

Soule (0-4) went 7.0 innings, allowing four unearned runs on just three hits and a walk while fanning four batters. Ed Lewicki (1-0) picked up the win, going 5.0 innings and scattering two runs on five hits, while Matt Quintana picked up the save after quashing Fairfield's seventh-inning rally and throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday, March 26 when in-state foe Quinnipiac University visits Alumni Diamond at 3pm.
