Baseball Opens MAAC Play With Split Against Siena

FAIRFIELD, Conn.  –
The Fairfield University baseball team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with a doubleheader split against Siena College this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Stags took the opener, 4-3, but fell to the Saints in the second game, 7-4.
 
Junior Rob LoPinto was a combined 5-for-9 on the day with three runs scored.
 
Freshman pitcher Mike Wallace improved to 2-1 on the season after a solid outing in the first game. Wallace took a shutout into the sixth inning, ultimately going 5.1 innings and allowing just three runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Anthony DiMauro picked up the save, tossing 3.2 shutout innings of relief scattering two hits while striking out two batters. Siena's Matt Gage (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned on six hits, while fanning 10 batters.
 
In the opener, Fairfield (6-10; 1-1 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as LoPinto led off with a single and later scored. The Stags added another run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Sal Ciccone. Fairfield made it 4-0 in the fourth inning as rookie Jake Salpietro drove in two runs with a single to right field. Siena (5-14; 1-1 MAAC) made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth inning by pushing three runs across the plate. But DiMauro checked in and shut the door on the Saints to preserve the win.
 
The Stags jumped out to an early lead in the second game as well. Senior Jack Giannini put Fairfield on the board in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single. The Stags added two more runs in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by Mike Bennett and Ryan Plourde.  
 
Siena cut it 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning by scoring twice on two wild pitches. The Stags got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth after the Saints walked in a run to make it 4-2. Siena broke it open in the top of the sixth inning with a five-run effort and held off Fairfield the rest of the way. The Stags had their chances throughout the game, but stranded 12 base runners.
 
Siena's Justin Brantley (2-3) got the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts while Neil Fryer got the save. Sophomore EJ Ashworth received a no-decision after scattering two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Senior Kyle Capaldo took the loss after a tough outing. Freshman Tim Duggan  pitched the final two innings of the game, walking just one batter while not allowing a hit.
 
Fairfield and Siena will close out the season series tomorrow, March 24, at Alumni Diamond. First pitch has been pushed back an hour to 1pm.
