Baseball Opens MAAC Play at Home This Weekend

Weekly Notes

Fairfield will open action at Alumni Diamond against Siena College this weekend in the Stags first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series of the season. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 at 12pm followed by a single game on March 24 at 12pm.

On the Web: As always, Live Stats are available for all home games.

Fairfield (5-9) vs. Siena (4-13): Fairfield took all three games from Siena last season in Loudonville, N.Y. The Stags began with a doubleheader sweep (7-4, 9-3) on May 11 and then closed out the series with a 9-2 victory the following day. Jack Giannini hit .417 (5-for-12) in the series with seven RBI and two runs scored while Anthony Hajjar hit .455 (5-for-11) with four runs scored. The Stags have won four of the last five meetings with the Saints' lone victory coming on May 1, 2011 in a 2-1 victory at Alumni Diamond. Junior Ryan Plourde is a career .412 hitter (7-for-17) with five runs scored and seven driven in against the Saints.

Fairfield in MAAC Openers: Since 2004, Fairfield is 5-3 in league openers but have dropped the last two. Those losses came against Iona (2012) and Saint Peter's (2011).

Fairfield in Home Openers: Fairfield has won just two home openers over the last 10 seasons. The wins came in 2003 against CW Post and more recently in 2010 against Quinnipiac.

Still Going: Senior Jack Giannini is riding a 28-game on-base streak which dates back to last season. He had an eight-game hitting streak to start the season as well. Junior Ryan Plourde has reached base in all 14 games.

Patient at the Plate: Senior Anthony Hajjar has been patient at the plate this season, striking out just twice in 57 at-bats this season. In the NCAA rankings released on Monday, Hajjar is the 12th-toughest Division I player to strikeout this season.

Looking Ahead: Fairfield hosts in-state foes Quinnipiac on March 26 and Hartford on March 28 at Alumni Diamond. The Stags then hit the road for a three-game series at Rider beginning on March 30.
